Ram Singh Urveti est l'une des figures historiques de l'art tribal contemporain indien.
D'importantes peintures murales de Ram Singh Urveti sont conservées au musée de l’homme de Bhopal. Ses peintures célèbrent les esprits Gond. Les sujets peints sont informels. Evanescents, ils appartiennent au monde des esprits. Buffles, totems, hommes, chamans, pots à offrande, serpents, arbres s'entrelacent, se transforment et mutent en d'improbables silhouettes, celles des rêves et des contes de la tribu Gond, en général, de Ram Singh, en particulier. L'absence de contour pour cerner les formes, excepté pour les yeux, renforce l'effet d'hybridation.
Les dessins de Ram Singh Urveti possèdent de cette force énigmatique que l’on retrouve dans l’art brut. On pense à l'un des grands noms de l'outsider art américain, Scottie Wilson.
L'arbre, comme chez beaucoup d'artistes tribaux, est omniprésent dans ses peintures. Ram Singh Urveti concentre son intérêt sur le tronc de l'arbre, évocation de la puissance sereine. Le tronc concentre l'énergie. Ainsi, les esprits prennent souvent la forme allégorique de cette partie de l'arbre. Ils prennent une place imposante sur la toile, la structurent, l'organisent. Cette candeur visuelle, renforcée par l'arrondie des formes, évoque imperceptiblement un tout autre courant artistique, celui du graff et de ces turgescences picturales.
D'une tribu, celle des rues de New York, à l'autre, celle des forêts du Madya Pradesh, les peintures de Ram Singh Urveti ont l'ingénuité poétique des arts populaires.

Ram Singh Urveti is one of the most important figures in contemporary Indian tribal art.
Some of his more important murals are in the collections of the Museum of Man in Bhopal. His paintings celebrate the spirits of the Gond tribe but their subjects are formless. Evanescent, they belong to the world of spirits: buffalos, totems, men, shamans, offering pots, serpents, and trees intertwine, and are transformed into bizarre forms, the stuff of dreams and tribal stories. This effect is accentuated by the absence of outlines, except for around the eyes.
Ram Singh Urveti’s drawings have the same enigmatic power found in art brut. His work has affinities with that of one of the great names of outsider art, Scottie Wilson.
As seen in the art of many tribal artists, trees are omnipresent in Ram Singh’s paintings. His interest is concentrated on the trunk of the tree, an evocation of serene power and a concentration of energy that, like a mountain, seems indestructible. Thus his spirits often take the same stocky, thickset form of this part of the tree. They occupy, structure, and organize an important position on the canvas.
The visual naïveté reinforced by the rounded forms is also evocative of another current form of art, graffiti. In the art of both tribes, the one on the streets of New York and the other in the forests of Madhya Pradesh, the poetic ingenuity of the popular arts can be found.
